Frequently Asked Questions

  • The game refuses to start up.
  • The game says the file DDRAW.DLL is missing.

Make sure you have installed DirectX 2.0 or newer. You can download it for free.

  • I have installed DirectX and the game will still not work.

You need a version of your graphics card driver that supports DirectX 2.0.

  • How do I send messages during the game?

Press either Enter or Return, type your message and press either Enter or Return. Press Esc to cancel the message.

  • Which language should I use when communicating with Byte Enchanters?

You may use Finnish in your comments if you wish, along with English. Please do not feel obligated to use English because most of our material is in English.

  • Does the network game work?

Yes. You might think it doesn't work because you're unable to start a new game. It does work, but someone must first join your game for you to be able to start it. Also, each player (except the one who initiated the game) must press the OK box in the upper left-hand corner of the Join Network Game -screen. Note that there might not be a lot of players at a certain moment, but we try to monitor your visits and enter your games if you decide to start one. Also, at 3.00 P.M. Finnish time there will be games in which you can join. At present, it is not possible to join a game which has already started. It is likely that this will be changed in the future.

  • Can I use my friend's license code?

It is not possible to play with the same license code at the same time with someone else. You have to get your friend another code. You may, however (and it is even desirable) to copy him the files you've downloaded from our site.

  • The game screen is off-center or the game gives an alert "Initialization FAILED! Check lc.err file for detail!"

The lc.err file says something like "Line: 834. Text: Can't set display mode to 800*600*8!"

At startup, the game switches to 800x600 monitor resolution. If your system is set up so that this mode is not available or there is some other problem with it, the display may be off center. Unfortunately, we have not found out a fix for this problem. You might try adjusting your monitor's setting but I'm afraid other programs might not look as good then.

You might try to update your display drivers to the newest possible versions, since there might be a conflict between your display drivers or hardware and DirectX 3.0.

  • The game screen is off-center or the game gives an alert "Initialization FAILED! Check lc.err file for detail!"

The lc.err file says something about not being able to initialize or find a sound card.

The problem is with your sound card. Most likely it is not (fully) compatible with DirectX 3.0. The game requires DirectX AND a functioning sound card to work (even if the sounds are off - this is a "feature" of DirectX). I recommend making sure from your sound card manufacturer that your drivers are the newest possible and that it is compatible with DirectX 3.0.

  • The game says the game server doesn't answer.

The most likely explanation for this is that you're trying go access the game server from behind a firewall.

  • I can't enter the demo mode, there is no "Not Yet" -button.

Please set the resolution of the screen to 800x600 (not 640x480) before starting the game.

  • The sound volume is way too high.

It is difficult (read almost impossible) to find a suitable sound volume, because on certain sound cards the volume is too low, and at the same setting it is way too high on other cards. So we have arrived at a compromise, which is the current setting.

  • How do I buy the game?
  1. Download the game and try it.
  2. Select the vendor closest to you and enter their site for details on paying.
  3. You will receive a license code (the format is 99999 99999 999999 9999 99999 9999 999). When you start up the game, enter the license in the 7 boxes - the first numer inthe first box, the second number in the second etc.) After this you will be able to play network games without limitations.
  • Can I buy the game without a credit card?

Yes. setSystems accepts checks and money orders, please visit their ordering page.

  • Are there any cheat codes for Legal Crime?

No. There is none and never has been any cheat codes for the public versions of Legal Crime. If someone tells you there are, try their codes - they will not work.

  • Can I play from behind a firewall?

Yes, but it requires some configuring. These ports have to be open (they're all two-way connections):

  • 10750
  • 10760
  • 12762
  • 12763
  • 12764
  • 12765
  • 12766

Known Bugs

  • Frequent crashes (especially during recruiting or when starting a new game, but at other times, too).

We have found out that 16 Mb is a little tight for Legal Crime at the moment (the requested memory size might decrease in the future). So in case you experience frequent unexplained crashes, try to close everything else except Legal Crime. Or, upgrade your memory to 24 Mb or more. If you still experience crashes after upgrading your memory, please contact us.

  • The ghost bug

When the player gives commands to a gangster who is arrested and released later, a ghost of the gangster may appear. You can not give commands to the ghost. This bug has been fixed, but the fixed version has not been released because that would mean that we would have to release a version that is not compatible with the older ones. So we are waiting for enough changes to accumulate to justify the release of a non-compatible version.

  • Problems with AWE64

This sound card is not fully compatible with Legal Crime, but the new drivers should resolve the problem. They're available at

Troubleshooting

  • Download problems

We have noticed that AOL users frequently experience problems downloading the game. They usually get an error message saying "Zip file is damaged, truncated, or has been changed since it was created. If you downloaded this file, try downloading it again."

The problem is probably with a browser that is used on AOL. We do not use such a browser, but we suggest trying either Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer for the download.
